One of my neighbours Mr. Gupta who was new in the city came to me and told that he was suffering from fever and cough. He asked which hospital he should go. I suggested him a few good private hospitals, but he was more interested in the government hospitals. I warned him not to go to government hospital if he has not any links there. After all, it's not everybody’s cup of tea to get treatment from a government hospital and it is even more difficult for office goers.
Surprisingly my neighbour turned out to be a very brave person; he declared that he would go to the government hospital. Well! I gave in and provided the name and address of nearest government hospital which was 10 kilometres away from the home.
Before his departure, I narrated some qualities that a person requires to be a successful government hospital patient. Mr. Gupta was thinking that he would go office late or at most take a half day leave from office and that would do. It is not so my friend I painfully exclaimed as sorrowful memories of government hospital evoked in my mind. I made Mr. Gupta comfortably sit beside me. I said, “you need to take leave of a week at least you have to leave your entire world aside and devote full day time to the hospital. It's not all; you need some other qualities too.
Patience is the key. You need to stand in queue for hours in different counters. First you have to stand for the receipt, for check up, for medicine and if needed then for blood, x-ray and other tests, you will see many persons who will proudly say that they are staffed and thus they are authorized to avail the services without standing in a queue.
They will directly approach the window and quell if anyone try to resist them. You cannot say anything to these people. They will not listen to you and it is barbarous to argue. After it, there would be some patients who would take undue advantage of being female. Still there is a category of people who dare not to call themselves belongs to the female gender they have other pretences for not standing in the queue. Including all these types of people in the window counter, there is one big line in and small Sub-lines on the both side of the window giving it an arrow shape.
Stamina is necessary you need not to be seriously ill and needs to stand in queue for many hours before your turn comes. The fourth necessary thing is money. Most of the people go to govt hospital just to save it and it is the most needed thing. You go to government hospital it does not mean that your treatment is free. You have to pay when you get the receipt. Doctors will prescribe many such medicines which are expensive and not available in the hospital so you have to buy these medicines from the market.
One more interesting thing about government hospital is that no matter how long it takes you to reach the doctor, the later will check you up in a minute or two. There is no lunch time for the doctors and other staffs of the hospital though there would be a board informing the time of the lunch. Doctors treat patients as if they are doing any social service or favour on them. They are careless, indifferent not punctual and devoid of pity and sympathy towards patients. They come to the hospital for time pass and salary, not to treat poor patient though they get the salary for the same. O God when these government employees will understand that they are the servant of public and get the salary for public servicing.
After listening to my words, Mr. Gupta rested his face on his hands and took some deep breaths and said I will better go to any private hospital.
